Winners of the 2019 “Scholarship of Excellence” Announced by STEM DRC Initiative and SMIN Power Group LLC

The STEM DRC Initiative and SMIN Power Group LLC are pleased to announce the 53 winners of our Ngalula Mubenga Scholarships of Excellence in STEM for 2019. In addition to these STEM education scholarships, there are 10 additional scholarship awards pending student confirmation of acceptance.

The STEM DRC Initiative is a 501c3 non-profit association working in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to promote education in Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM).

“At the STEM DRC Initiative, we strongly believe that STEM will enable Congolese to find solutions to our problems. This is why these STEM excellence scholarships are part of our efforts to promote STEM in the DRC (StemDrc.com, 2019).”

SMIN Power Group LLC President and CEO Dr. Sandrine Ngalula Mubenga, PE was born in the DRC.  She is now an accomplished businesswoman  and Professor of Electrical Engineering Technology at the University of Toledo, in the USA.  She says, “The Congo has given me so much that I feel indebted to participate in its development. In my opinion, education, education and knowledge are the cornerstones of an economically viable and morally sound society… (Ndungidi, 2019).

Dr. Mubenga told the Courrier de Kinshasa that she was pleased with the results and the quality of this year’s laureates. “This second edition shows that there is a more certain craze for Stem in the DRC at the youth level and also at the level of private companies. We have received applications from all over the DRC and curiously, we have also received applications from South Africa, Canada, the United States and Kenya. This year, thanks to the sponsors we were able to offer fifty-three scholarships, with ten waiting. Our goal would be to provide a hundred a year, while building the Stem community in the DRC, ” she said (ibid).

Now in the third year, the scholarship program has attracted other sponsors as well as the support of the Government in the DRC. Of the fifty-three scholarships, twenty are supported by the Denise-Nyakeru-Tshisekedi Foundation, which is the foundation of the first lady of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

I’m convinced that directing girls to the Stem will contribute to the development of tomorrow’s women’s elite , said Denise Nyakeru Tshisekedi on Twitter (ibid).”

The STEM scholarships are awarded to worthy students from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and are won on a competitive basis.  Students will receive funds for tuition, syllabus and transportation.

This marks the 2nd edition of the STEM Excellence Scholarship. The scholarships are renewable for the duration of the studies of the laureates provided that they apply each year while maintaining the criteria of excellence.  The complete list of winners can also be seen at https://www.stemdrc.com/cloture-de-bourse
